Microsoft spent a billion dollars on a story nobody could see.
Nine hundred geothermal wells, 550 feet down, cutting the campus's energy in half — one of the largest geoexchange fields in the country.
Fewer than one in five of the people who worked there knew it existed.
A billion dollars of climate leadership that stayed a press release — something the company announced, never something anyone could feel.
The obvious answer was more signs. And we were good at making them.
Beautiful interpretive panels at every feature, mounted on posts milled from the site's own timber. Like all physical signage, they did one thing exceptionally well: they waited, quietly, for someone curious enough to stop and read.
But sustainability isn't static.
The trees cleared to build the campus weren't discarded — they were milled into the furniture inside. Maybe the most elegant story on the whole campus. It was cut from the signage with a single note:
"Not clearly visible from the exterior."
It wasn't a content problem.
It was a medium problem.
A sign can only tell the story of what sits directly in front of it.
How do you point at 900 wells buried 550 feet down? How do you show 220 miles of pipe running beneath someone's feet? How do you tell a visitor that the bench they're resting on was once part of the forest that stood here — when that story lives inside another building?
And even a perfect sign is frozen the day it's printed, while the campus keeps changing — new buildings, new numbers, every quarter.
So I stopped designing signs. I built an augmented-reality layer inside Microsoft MyHub — the app everyone already carried — that finally made the invisible something you could see.
